The dark wood

Midway upon the journey of our life
I found myself within a forest dark,
For the straightforward pathway had been lost.

Dante, the opening of The Divine Comedy. Longfellow's translation.

Seven hundred years old, and still the most exact description anyone has managed of a very ordinary Tuesday. You are not at the start of anything. You are not near the end. You were on a path, you are now among trees, and you could not say when the turning happened.

Most of us meet that wood in small ways rather than large ones. The birthday you remember on the Saturday. The friend you have thought about every week since March and have not once messaged. The card still standing on the counter where you put it, addressed, unsent.

A watercolour of dark pines under a pale sky.
The wood is not the interesting part of the poem. What happens next is.

Somebody had already gone for help

Dante does not find his own way out. A guide arrives, and the guide arrives because somebody sent him. Beatrice had already sought him out and asked, on Dante's behalf, before Dante understood that he needed anything at all.

She stays with him the rest of the way. When Virgil can go no further, she takes over and walks the last of it herself.

That is the whole idea of this app, and it is a smaller idea than the poem makes it sound. Help arranged quietly, slightly in advance, by someone who was paying attention while you were busy being lost.

The other Beatrice

There is a second one, three centuries later, and she is nobody's idea of a gentle guide. Shakespeare's Beatrice is the fastest talker in Messina and she aims it squarely at the people she loves most.

I had rather hear my dog bark at a crow
than a man swear he loves me.

Beatrice, Much Ado About Nothing, Act I.

Her wit never lands on anybody's character. It lands on their behaviour, usually on their nonsense, and always from someone who would put herself between you and harm without being asked.

She is in the app too. One of the five voices is called Sharp, and it exists because some people are far better served by being teased than by being soothed.

Steady

"Laundry's been sitting a couple days. When you're ready."

Sharp

"That laundry has been sitting there for 6 days. It's forming a government."

Same information, same restraint underneath, same list of things neither of them will ever say. You choose which one you want and you change your mind whenever you like.

What she is meant to be

A companion who has seen a great many Tuesdays. She walks slightly ahead of you and holds the light over the place you are about to put your foot.

The figure at the top of this page is her, and she is painted from behind on purpose. A face would make her a mascot, and a mascot wants something from you. A carried light is a presence with no personality to manage. She is not the point of the walk. She is just not going to let you do it in the dark.

Everyone around you is living a life, and you are right there with them.

Who it is for

People who care enormously and drop things anyway.

That combination confuses everyone, including the person doing it. Caring is supposed to be the hard part, so when the caring is effortless and the doing keeps failing, the obvious explanation is that something is wrong with you. It is a bad explanation and it has cost a lot of people a lot of friendships.

The real answer is duller. Invisible work that repeats forever and never turns urgent is the exact shape of thing an ADHD brain puts down, and it goes down quietly, and the bill arrives months later in somebody else's feelings. Beatrice was built for that specific gap, for the people standing in it, and for the ones who love them.

What she will not do

She will not show you a list of what you missed. She will not hold a broken streak over you, rank you against the people you live with, or tell you how long it has been since you called your mother.

She has never used an exclamation point and she is not going to start. Nothing she has to tell you is worth shouting, and a brain already running a commentary on its own shortfalls does not need software joining in.

What she does instead is remember. Then, at roughly the right moment, she mentions it once.
